Tim McGraw will perform at the Stadium of Fire as the show’s headliner on Saturday, July 2.
Featuring a country artist is a change from last year’s performance by classic rock band Journey, but the show could be popular among BYU students.
BYU student Savannah Moore grew up listening to McGraw’s music and would like to hear McGraw sing “Don’t Take the Girl.”
“It’s just such a cute love song,” Moore said. “It just tugs at the heartstrings.”
McGraw made his debut in 1992, which means his career spans the lifetime of many students at BYU. McGraw has had 36 No. 1 singles and has won three Grammy Awards and 16 Academy of Country Music Awards during his time as an artist.
Moore’s friend and fellow BYU sophomore Megan Thorstenson said, “I haven’t heard a single one of his songs that I don’t like.”
Thorstenson said she normally spends Independence Day with her grandparents. Last year, her grandparents bought tickets to the Stadium of Fire.
She said even if her grandparents don’t get tickets to the show this year, she will probably try to listen to McGraw sing from Rock Canyon Park.
America’s Freedom Festival puts on the Stadium of Fire every year.
“There’s no doubt in my mind this will be one of our best shows,” said Paul Warner, the organization’s executive director, in a press release.
Tickets for the event can be purchased online or at the BYU Marriott Center Ticket office.
