From BYU graduates, to students, to lifelong cougar fans, many people came to LaVell Edwards stadium Friday to purchase sections of bench from the student section of the Marriott Center.

130 benches were sold to eager fans who were going to use the benches in different ways.

Chad Cluff, a self-proclaimed lifelong BYU sports fan, said he will use the bench as decoration.

“I have a den downstairs that’s devoted to BYU sports, so it’s going right in there,” Cluff said. “I have gone to and seen so many games at the Marriott Center, so having a piece of it in my home is going to be awesome.”

Michael McQuain also has a room in his home dedicated to BYU paraphernalia. He said the bench will be added to his collection of BYU sports autographs, photos and game programs.

“I’m a cougar super fan, a season ticket holder for football and basketball, I went to school here, I was on the football team here about 35 years ago,” McQuain said. “And this is a chance to own a part of BYU athletic history. How can you pass?”

McQuain was also buying benches for friends who were not in Provo, but heard about the sale and asked him to get them a bench.

“A lot of people want a piece of this history,” McQuain said.

Recent BYU graduate, Melanie Gurney, bought two benches out of nostalgia as well.

“I’m buying the benches because I love BYU basketball and it seems like a great memory to have,” Gurney said.

Another cougar fan, Lisa Pace, had a different idea of what to do with the benches and said they were going out by her family’s basketball court. She said her strong ties to BYU made her want a bench.

“I have a brother-in-law who worked here and all my family members have gone here, sisters and brothers,” Pace said. “And I worked here.”

Originally, on the BYU Cougar Basketball Facebook page the benches were priced based on length, however because of the high demand for the benches the price changed Friday to $25 a bench, regardless of length.

Fans who did not get a chance to purchase a bench will have another opportunity in August at the Cougar Kickoff where the remaining 50 benches will be for sale.
