Tuesday

President Cecil O. Samuelson and Sister Sharon Samuelson will speak at the Marriott Center at 11:05 a.m. The Devotional will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels and online at byub.org. Rebroadcast and archive information will be available atbyub.org/devotionals or speeches.byu.edu.

Soloists and groups of all ages are invited to display their singing skills and compete for exciting prizes! First place winners in various categories will each receive $500 in prizes including cash, gift certificates and recording sessions. Contestants can enter online at www.vocalsport.com. Register by Jan. 20 to save 50 percent on entry fee. Registration closes March 1 (or sooner if categories are filled). The public is invited to attend the competition March 12-14 at the Covey Center for the Arts. Tickets are $10 ($8 for groups of 10+) or $12 at the door. The Young Artists of Voice competition, featuring top student talent from BYU’s School of Music, will be held in three rounds Jan. 10, 12 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Madsen Recital Hall in the HFAC. Preliminary rounds, which are free and open to the public, will be held Jan. 10 and 12. The final round and awards presentation will take place on Jan. 14. Tickets are required and are available for purchase for $6 online at byuarts.com/tickets, by phone at 801-422-4322 or in person at the HFAC Ticket Office.

Wednesday
A night that showcases the amazing musical talents of six student performers will be held at 7 p.m. in the Varsity Theater. For more information, e-mail .

Geralyn Giovannetti will give a faculty oboe recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The event is free.

Thursday

The Young Ambassadors will present “Harmony: The Music of Life” at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. There will also be a matinee performance Saturday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m. These young performers combine contemporary music and dance for a fast-paced showcase of American musical theater. “Harmony” is a stage production celebrating favorite moments from some of America’s best-loved musical scores like “Carousel,” “Dream Girls,” “Wicked” and “The Prince of Egypt.” The show also highlights hits from artists like Benny Goodman, Michael Bublé and Billy Joel.

Donna Petersen will speak at the College of Life Sciences forum at 11 a.m. in the JSB auditorium. Her lecture is titled “Women and Children First: MCH as a Moral and Economic Imperative.”

Friday

The BYU Motion Picture Archive Film Series, part of the L. Tom Perry Special Collections, will show “Foreign Correspondent,” starring Joel McCrea, Laraine Day, Herbert Marshall, George Sanders and Albert Basserman, in the library auditorium on level one. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the movie will be shown at 7 p.m. The movie runs for 120 minutes. The event is free and open to the public.

The School of Music presents Laurence Lowe in a faculty horn recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Guest artist Elizabeth Buck will give a flute recital at 5:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The event is free.

To participate in the Circle of Honor Essay Contest, students can submit a 2-page double spaced essay covering what honor means to them. The winner will be awarded $500. Essays must be submitted by Jan.13. For more information go to the calendar at byusa.byu.edu.

Monday

Join with more than 500 students and community members as they join in service projects at the Wilkinson Center and around the Provo Community from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in celebration of Martin Luther King Day.

Multicultural Services will honor the life and mission of Martin Luther King Jr. with a candlelight walk and memorial program. A processional from 5:30 to 6 p.m. will begin at the Carillon Bell Tower, followed by a memorial program in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom from 6 to 7 p.m. Admission is free.
