Letter: From the principal

71

When I was an elementary school student, teachers used the slogan “Utah Students Deserve More” to call upon the Utah Legislature to allocate more money for education.

I feel for the most part the teachers certainly deserved this raise.

What still boggles my mind though is how some 15 years later these teachers are still paid poorly, but their administrators are paid handsomely.

According to utahsright.com, a principal at a Jordan district elementary school, earned $114,878 last year.

This just happens to be the same principal quoted in the paper on Nov. 28, asking for more money in schools.

What is more, each of the 22 listings for secondary school principals in Utah shows that being a public school administrator is actually quite lucrative, with an average annual salary of $136,982 in 2010.

I don’t discount what teachers or administrators do, but it seems that perhaps teachers should start asking their principal, not the legislature, for a Christmas bonus this year.
