Letter: Brave enough to stop

99

At 7:30 a.m. the “Star-Spangled Banner” starts to play as the ROTC raises the flag above BYU campus.

It is astonishing how many students and faculty do not stop for the playing of the National Anthem.

That song and flag represent millions of men and women who have given their lives for the preservation of our freedom.

Recognizing their ultimate sacrifice, is it too great a sacrifice for us to pause for a couple minutes every morning to remember them and their sacrifice?

For two summers I have had the opportunity to intern on an Air Force Base. Every morning and evening the national anthem was played and everyone actually stopped, including those driving.

With a little extra effort we can return something to those who have given their lives for this great country.

“O, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?”

Notice this is a question. Are we brave enough to stop for the playing of the national anthem?

Let us respect those who have given their lives for this great country.
