Provo a capella veterans Extempo, BYU student a cappella band Vocal Point and The Garrens Comedy Troupe are scheduled to take the stage together for the first time Saturday at the Provo High School Theater.

The three groups are composed of current and former BYU students. All the groups have similar roots and have swapped members and ideas over the years, but they have never all appeared on the same stage the same night. Saturday’s performance should be enhanced by a “family atmosphere,” according to Vocal Point tenor Cory Mecham.

“We want to have a good time, but this performance will be special because all three groups come from the same background. Bob Ahlander and Dave Boyce (both of Extempo) started Vocal Point, and the Garrens started the same time. From there, all three groups sort of grew together,” he said.

Audience participation has always been a feature of all three groups’ performances, and Mecham said Saturday will be no different. He also said the groups plan on sharing members during the show, with some of Vocal Point’s and Extempo’s members joining in The Garrens’ skits and some of The Garrens’ members singing.

Mecham pointed out that Saturday’s performance represents a unique chance for fans of all three groups.

“This might be the only time all three groups perform together, so we hope to have a good crowd and put on a great show,” he said.

Tickets to the show are $6 general admission and are available at Mama’s Cafe, Best in Music (Edgemont Plaza and University Mall), and Provo’s Hogi Yogi
