BYU Unforum celebrates another year gone

Students gathered in celebration to enjoy special performances at the concluding Unforum of the 2013-2014 school year on April 15.

Performance groups included BYU Men’s Chorus, Divine Comedy, Vocal Point and Dr. Wood’s Chemistry Magic Show. Students also saw video clips of athletics, highlights from Brigham Awards and BYU trivia.

President Cecil O. Samuelson and his wife, Sister Sharon Samuelson, concluded the Unforum with closing remarks. Both expressed to the students the importance of understanding their potential.

Brandon Beck, a senior and BYUSA president at BYU, introduced President and Sister Samuelson and thanked them for their service to BYU.

“I’ve always viewed my life as being built with different chapters, and now it’s time to close the BYU chapter,” Sister Samuelson said. “It’s been a blessing in my life and my family’s life.”

Sister Samuelson expressed her love for the university and the students. She told the students to always remember they have wonderful potential to be the very best.

President Samuelson said he was going to miss the students but wouldn’t forget them.

“As we’ve seen from those who have performed, those that would have liked to have performed and those that could have performed, Heavenly Father’s endowed every one of you with a potential that is different from anyone else’s,” President Samuelson said. “Try and figure it out, and make sure you maximize that potential that will help you lead a happy and successful life.”

Beck said the Unforum was a culmination of the whole year and stood as a good reminder to give more and do more. According to Beck, the closing forum represents the students’ unity and feeling of belonging to a community.

“When you feel like you’re a part of something, you are more willing to get involved, get engaged and give back,” Beck said.

With his fist in the air and a hand on the pulpit, President Samuelson concluded by saying for the last time, “Go Cougars!”
