The BYU track and field team is in Tempe, Ariz. competing with about 15 teams at the Jim Click Invitational, hosted by Arizona State University.
“This one is really kind of our first big meet, with a lot of competition,” BYU men”s coach Mark Robison said.
BYU is sending a different group of athletes from the group that went to Monterrey, Mexico.
“Last week we had a few regional marks and that”s our goal this week,” Robison said. “We have a chance to get a lot of regional marks and progress each week.”
BYU women”s coach Craig Poole expects the meet to help the athletes get used to the outdoor season.
“There are new people who have the opportunity to compete,” Poole said.
Last year, the ASU meet proved to do this for some athletes. BYU men”s cross-country coach Ed Eystone said Kyle Perry had a breakout race last year, and will compete again in the 1500-meters.
Eyestone is sending about seven of the men”s distance runners, where they”ll be running shorter distances to work on their speed.
“I”m looking for athletes to work on their speed, so we get some real dividends at Stanford next weekend,” Eyestone said.
