First student wellness fair

BYU’s Student Wellness Center is hosting its first Student Wellness Fair Sept. 12 in Wilkinson Student Center Garden Court from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The fair will feature 38 booths of various services on campus. The Health Center, intramural sports, scuba diving, counseling and athletics will all have displays. There will also be giveaways and green smoothies full of fruits and veggies.

The Student Wellness Center offers advice to BYU students concerning various services available to enrich their lives. Upon entering the Student Wellness Office, a student can find staff ready to help. According to Bree Christiansen, the secretary of the center, Student Wellness engages in a holistic approach to wellness, incorporating the following eight dimensions of wellness: career, emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, physical, social and spiritual.

“The purpose of student wellness is to help students focus on all aspects of life, on and off campus,” said Larry Hall, director of student wellness. “Although people usually think of wellness in terms of physical wellness, there’s also financial, emotional, environmental and career wellness, and all of those entities exist here on this campus. Our purpose is to help students connect with those opportunities here at BYU.”

Larry Hall is ecstatic about the new fitness center in the Smith Fieldhouse. It is full of new equipment and is free to students.

“One of the most useful services that we offer is free personal training to students,” said Christiansen.

“The Student Wellness Center gave me the knowledge and tools that I needed to improve myself,” said Chelsea Katseanes, 22, a graduate student from Boise. “Going to the center and learning more about healthy living literally changed my way of thinking. I also learned how satisfying and fun it can be to live a healthy life.”

The Student Wellness Office is located in 203 Stephen L. Richards Building, and the staff are ready and willing to provide guidance in a supportive environment.

Last year, the center was launched during Involvapalooza, debuting a ferris wheel for students to ride,  but it is now putting on its own fair to raise awareness.

The Student Wellness Center has something to offer every student who is trying to better their life.

“It wasn’t just a program that I started and completed; it was the beginning to a new and better me,” Katseanes said.
