Former basketball player Jennifer Hamson signed with the two-time WNBA Champions Los Angeles Sparks, executive vice president and general manager Penny Toler announced Feb. 23.

Hamson played both volleyball and basketball during her time at BYU. She was originally drafted in 2014 but turned down the offer and  played volleyball for the Cougars.

“Jennifer is an all-around athlete who will give us a great defensive presence around the basket,” Toler said. “We look forward to seeing her develop into a solid player at both ends of the court.”

Hamson made it into the 1,000-point club her senior year at BYU. She scored 621 points of her total 1,437 during her senior year and shot 56.5 percent from the field. Hamson was named Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. Hamson is the only player to receive both awards in the same season.

“We are excited about Jen continuing and pursuing her basketball career with us here in Los Angeles,” Sparks head coach Brian Agler said. “Jen has a great future in basketball. At this moment she has the ability to greatly impact a game at the defensive end, and we look forward to helping her reach her potential.”

Per team policy, the terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
