TOOELE CITY, Utah (AP) — Members of the Humane Society of Utah say they are shocked and disheartened to hear about the fatal shooting of a horse near Tooele City, and are offering a $5,000 reward to find who’s responsible.

Tooele County sheriff’s detectives say the owner noticed one of his horses missing while feeding the animals Monday morning. He found a gate open and followed a bloody trail and hoof prints through the pasture until he found the horse’s body near a road.

Authorities found a slug in the animal’s body and a used shell casing near the corrals. They also say they found evidence that a building and horse trailer were burglarized.

Detectives have not yet identified suspects or a motive. They believe the shooting happened between Sunday night and Monday morning.
