Letter: Sportsmanship

99

As a former graduate of BYU I was excited to watch the basketball game against St. Mary’s on ESPN. Within a few minutes, I began to feel uneasy by what I was witnessing — and I’m not referring to the numbers on the scoreboard. I became disappointed with some of the players’ aggressive fouls, the technical given to the coach and the disrespectful behavior of the fans. It made me sick to my stomach to realize that members of our faith are under the microscope right now, and we certainly left the wrong impression. What is worse, President Uchtdorf recently reminded us to beware of pride in sporting events. It appears that we have not heeded his teachings.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a great sporting competition, and I am an avid BYU fan. However,  I am confident we can — and must — do better. We are being held to a higher standard, and we should strive to be an example both on and off the court.
