Letter: Tradition, spirit and honor

70

As I sat in the student section at the BYU vs. Utah football game Saturday night I heard plenty of spirit for the tradition.

What I failed to see was the honor.

I have never felt more ashamed to be a part of something. As I listened to the crowd around me, I wished I was not a part of this school.

The crowd booed as the Utes took the field. They shouted awful things at those playing the game. The spirit there was dark.

I love BYU. I am so grateful I have the opportunity to learn in this wonderful place so filled with the spirit of the Lord.

We respect each other, but we need to respect everyone.

The football game was just that, a game.

I hope we can remember what we stand for. People watch us.

When we treat others as we did that night, how can we continue to respect ourselves?
