Sacrificing unacceptable traditions

Elder Dallin H. Oaks challenged church members to show their love for God by giving up “traditions of our fathers” that are inconsistent with the gospel.

Immorality, pornography and dishonesty are several examples of “cultures of sin” mentioned. These must be overcome in order to follow the Savior.

“God doesn”t change,” Oaks said. “We are the ones who must change.”

Elder Oaks reminded Latter-day Saints that the gospel is based on individual accountability. When members decide to make these changes, they become the salt of the earth.

He shared several stories where people gave up negative aspects of their culture to build the kingdom. These individuals accepted the challenge to change for Christ.

The stories included examples of couple missionaries. They are needed to serve as a light to the world in areas where the church is not fully established. They can encourage others to overcome the world”s culture.

“By keeping commandments, repenting and giving up all that”s contrary to God, we become fellow citizens with God,” Oaks said. “We become what this gospel intends us to be.”
