Letter to the editor: ‘Commitment to excellence’ not really there

    35

    Dear Editor:

First of all, I think it is great that the baseball and softball teams finally get the stadium that has so long been neglected. But in the article last week concerning the building of the stadium, President Merrill J. Bateman said, “We are committed to excellence in all aspects of our athletic programs at BYU.”

If this were the case, the administration would not be getting rid of a gymnastics team that has finished fifth in the nation the last two years, along with two national champions on individual events last year.

We would already have that indoor practice field for football that they have been talking about for years.

We aren’t believing all the lies we are told. When the actions of the administration start reflecting what they are saying, they might become more credible in the eyes of the students.

Until then, I am sure they will keep up their so-called “commitment to excellence.”
