Police suspect arson caused Provo fire

    Police are conducting an arson investigation in connection with a house fire that occurred in Provo Tuesday afternoon.

    Provo Police Detective Sgt. Jerry Harper is leading the investigation. Harper said the police are conducting an arson investigation because gasoline was found at the house.

    The fire took place at the home of Jeffrey and Katherine Nelson, 615 E. 2825 North in Provo. The couple is in critical condition at the University of Utah burn unit. Nelson and his wife were Life Flighted to Salt Lake from Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

    Jeffrey, 34, suffered second and third degree burns on 75 percent of his body, Harper said. Katherine, 27, sustained second and third degree burns on 25 percent of her body, Harper said.

    The couple have a four-month-old baby who was not at the home when the fire occurred.

    Harper said the estimated damage to the home was around $80,000. The home was in the process of being remodeled at the time of the fire.
