NCAA-sanctioned women’s softball team formed at BYU

    BYU President Merrill J. Bateman announced Thursday the formation an NCAA-sanctioned women’s softball team at BYU. BYU will become the the sixth team in the new Mountain West Conference in the 1999-2000 season.

    “For several years, BYU has supported an extramural women’s softball program,” President Bateman said in a press release. “We are excited about this opportunity and fully expect to be competetive within our conference and the nation.”

    Elaine Michaelis, BYU’s executive director of women’s athletics, said in the release “this is a major step forward” for the women’s sports programs at BYU.

    “We are grateful to the administration for providing more opportunities for women athletes,” Michaelis said.
