Gonzales described her nine month recovery process following a torn ACL as “the smoothest physical recovery.” However, the road back to the court presented unexpected mental and emotional challenges for the redshirt sophomore.

“All within two hours I found out my career was over,” senior gymnast Shannon Evans said. She couldn’t believe it.

What started out as an idea in an advanced reporting class became something that was seen all over the BYU Twitter community.

BYU men’s and women’s basketball combined for an 0-2 record at the 2020 WCC tournament despite having received the higher ranking in both games.

BYU defeated LMU 57-42 at the Marriot Center on Saturday, Feb. 29, on senior day. Coach Judkins gave a shout-out to the seniors and all the contributions that they made not only in today’s win against LMU, but in the success of the Cougars all season long.

BYU defeated St. Mary’s 60-39 at the Marriott Center on Thursday, Feb. 13. St. Mary’s came to BYU after beating No. 15 ranked Gonzaga 70-60.

Saint Mary’s visited Provo on Feb. 13, falling 60-39 to BYU. Saint Mary’s was fresh of a 70-60 victory against No. 11 Gonzaga in a game where the Gaels went 14 for 21 from behind the 3-point line — a rhythm they couldn’t find against the Cougars.

Head coach Jeff Judkins reached an impressive career landmark win after 19 seasons with BYU women’s basketball — No. 400.

BYU sports psychologist and human performance consultant Dr. Craig Manning agrees with the idea that great performance requires a strong mentality, but takes it a step farther. Because of a national title in men’s cross country, a second place finish in women’s cross country and a fifth place finish in soccer, the Division I Learfield IMG College Director’s Cup has BYU athletics ranked fourth in the country behind Virginia, Michigan and Stanford. Boise State comes in at No. 23 in IMG Director’s Cup results and ranks second among the four rivals, while Utah sits at No. 43 and Utah State ranks No. 66.

BYU women’s basketball is heading into the upcoming season without last year’s top scorer Shaylee Gonzales. The guard suffered a season-ending knee injury in July and will be redshirting the 2019-20 season. Last year, Gonzales was ranked No. 2 nationally for points per game as a freshman, averaging 17.

Highlighted by a dominant second half, the BYU women’s basketball team stormed back from a 13-point deficit in the third quarter to defeat the Pepperdine Waves 68-63 in the West Coast Conference semi-final on March 11. The Cougars will advance to the WCC championship game tomorrow against an injury-riddled Gonzaga team that came into the tournament as the No.1 seed.

BYU men’s basketball conference championship hopes came to an abrupt halt March 9, losing 80-57 to conference seeded No. 7 San Diego.

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams finished their regular season schedules with wins March 2. With the postseason on the horizon, the two teams will now set their focuses on Las Vegas and the WCC tournament.

BYU Women’s basketball finished its regular season on a high note, logging a six game winning streak. Facing Santa Clara University on March 2, the Cougars scraped by with a 69-64 win, bringing their 2019 regular season record to 23-6.
