A six-game winning streak in the WCC has the BYU women’s basketball team in a tie atop the conference and ranked in the top 25 for the first time in five seasons.

“I’m really proud of these guys,” BYU coach Jeff Judkins said after a win against Portland on Saturday. “We have a long ways to go, but we’re getting better in some areas and we’ll keep working.”

BYU center Kristen Riley goes for a layup during Thursday's game against Loyola Marymount at the Marriott Center.
The Cougars rank No. 23 in the AP Poll, and if they continue in the pattern they have set they should challenge for the conference title. BYU has been so dominant lately that Judkins has been able to give his reserves some valuable playing time.

The Cougars will have quite a matchup Saturday when they play against No. 6 Santa Clara. Forward Lindsay Leo scored 23 points for SCU (8-11) in their last game. In comparison, senior Kristen Riley is the high scorer for BYU and her career high is 23 points. The game will be on Santa Clara’s home court.

Historically, SCU has been one of the top teams in the WCC, having made 11 postseason (NCAA/WNIT) tournament appearances and won eight WCC titles.

BYU is taking on Seattle University for a midweek challenge. A major player for SU which the Cougars will need to keep their eye on is senior Talisa Rhea.  She leads the team in scoring, averaging 14 points a game.

SU has an 8-12 record this year, but the team is one that can’t be ignored. They push other teams up and down the court and fight until the last seconds.

The last game SU played, it won 86-58 over UC Irvine. Four of the players on the team scored in double digits. SU faces a tough test playing BYU.

BYU will take on Seattle University tonight in the Connolly Center at 8 p.m. MST.
