President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency spoke about members’ inheritance as children of God and how they can help others accept their eternal inheritance.
“When you choose whether to make or keep a covenant with God, you choose whether you will leave an inheritance of hope to those who might follow your example,” he said.
He talked about one of his ancestors, Heinrich Eyring, who came from Germany to the United States and later joined the church. After two months of study and prayer, Heinrich had a dream in which he was told to be baptized; soon thereafter, he was. Heinrich served a six-year mission only months later.
“Even though he had so recently found the Lord’s plan of happiness, he knew that his hope for eternal joy depended on the free choices of others to follow his example,” he said. “His hope of eternal happiness depended on people not yet born.”
Pres. Eyring said we must make covenants with God and faithfully perform the duties required of us and that it will take faith in Christ to help us keep those covenants throughout life.
He discussed the example of Lehi as a parent of the rebellious Laman and Lemuel. He said Lehi continued to testify of Jesus Christ to his sons and was an obedient example to them, keeping his arms of love outstretched to his family. He said parents can also do things such as singing hymns and reading scriptures with their children at a young age, which will help them come back to the gospel if they wander for a time.
“After all we can do in faith, the Lord will justify our hopes for greater blessings for our families than we can imagine,” he said.
