Living longer and enjoying life is all about exercise. That is what keynote speaker Dr. Steven Heiner told seniors at the Media Kickoff Ceremony for the 2006 Provo Senior Games.

The senior games have been established for the purpose of promoting healthy lifestyles among seniors and bringing attention to senior issues and programs.

Heiner”s remarks were directed toward providing healthy lifestyle tips for seniors. “Self-esteem is promoted with exercise,”he said. “There is a lower overall mortality rate that benefits the most active persons.”

Heiner explained that exercise reduces the risks of heart disease, colon cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, depression, arthritis and poor quality of life.

Heiner”s address was followed by the Senior Gold-Medal Mile Walk around Riverview Park where the ceremony was held.

The meeting was attended by many of the local sponsors including, the games title sponsor Nu Skin Enterprises who has been instrumental in the production of the games.

All Provo Seniors over the age of 50 are encouraged to participate in the games. All participants may register for any of the 11 events held including: track & field, horseshoes, golf, racquetball, tennis, bowling, runs/walks, table tennis and basketball skills.

Seniors may register by completing a registration form found at the Eldred Senior Center, 270 W. 500 North, or the Parks and Recreation Office, 351 W. Center Street. Other information on the games can be found at www.provofoundation.org .

“I know that the older people of our community can enjoy full and fun filled lives if they keep themselves physically fit,” Provo senior Earl Williams said. “The Senior Games is a perfect place where we can do that.”
