Entering its third game of the fall season, the Cougar softball team are looking to start out strong as they host UVU on Tuesday night.

The last time the two teams met, it took extra innings to decide a winner with the Cougars coming out on top with a final score of 3-2.

“They had a very good team last year.” head coach Gordon Eakin said. “I expect them to still be good this year.”

The Wolverines are 3-0 in their fall schedule and would love nothing more than to beat the Cougars.

“UVU always gives a good game.” senior outfielder Carly Duckworth said. “We have to come out and play hard. We have to play every game like we are playing our best opponent. “

Last year the Cougars had a difficult time hitting the ball well against the Wolverines.

“Last year in conference, we struggled against them.” sophomore Gordy Bravo said. “We struggled with our hitting and we struggled against their pitchers last year.”

This week in practice, the team has emphasized the importance of hitting the ball well. Also they have held several scrimmages with live pitching to help the players recognize the different types of movements from pitchers.

“We are practicing hitting constantly… and working on change-ups because we know that they are going to throw that at us because we are such a powerful hitting team.” Bravo said.

To make sure that it’s not such a close game again, Eakin expects his players to start the game with a lot of energy and to play with no fear.

The Cougars will take the field at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night and are hoping to stay undefeated this fall.
