Allegiant Travel Company announced new nonstop service from Provo airport to Oakland, Calif., beginning June 7, 2013.

“We are pleased to announce a new affordable and convenient travel option for the residents of Provo,” Andrew C. Levy, Allegiant Travel Company president, said. “We are confident area residents will appreciate the convenience of flying nonstop to the San Francisco Bay area and the value of bundling their air, hotel and car rental reservations together.”

Provo Mayor John Curtis, who was in attendance, seemed pleased with the benefits it will bring to Provo as well as the citizens of Provo.

“It expands the range that people can visit out of the Provo airport,” Mayor Curtis said. He continued that people can easily fly out to San Francisco for a weekend or so and “watch a baseball game or a football game.”

The San Francisco area is a large tourist area where landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf and Alcatraz are located.

Nicolette Nord, an elementary education major from Danville, Calif., is extremely pleased with the announcement.

“I never thought this would happen,” Nord said. “It will be so much more convenient when I go home now because Provo airport is so close and Oakland is the closest airport to me. And it’s so cheap so I’ll definitely be going home more often knowing this change.”

Not only will it make vacations or quick trips to northern California available and affordable, but there is also hope that tourism efforts in Utah will benefit.

Mayor Curtis thinks the changes will have a positive impact on Provo and even Utah. “Hopefully it will open up for skiing,” Mayor Curtis said. He continued that interest in catching a BYU football or basketball game will potentially bring visitors to BYU.

Allegiant Airlines prides itself in flying low-cost, high-efficiency and announced that prices for flight will begin at $59.99 one way.

Not only does this shed light on the airlines’ efforts, but it focuses on the magnitude of the Provo area.

“This flight into the Bay Area is another part of the momentum we’re experiencing in Provo. It’s evidence of the incredible quality of life that defines us,” said Mayor Curtis.

Provo residents are now able to experience more of the United States for a much cheaper price. For more information on flight schedules, baggage fees, deadlines to purchase tickets and where to buy them, visit www.allegiant.com.
