The new stake is momentous for India, as the organization of a stake demonstrates sufficient membership activity, priesthood and leadership.
LDS missionaries first set foot in india in 1850, but had little success due to language barriers. In 1993, a mission was created in Bangalore, India. With the opening of the New Delhi mission in 2007 there are now 2 missions in India.
India currently has about 10,000 LDS members.
