Bridal Magazine: The Groom’s Outfit

114

The groom is always next to his beautiful bride on their wedding day. Trying to look as good as she does can be difficult, he isn’t going to be the better looking out of the two but he can be pretty close.

A groom looking for the right suit or tuxedo, shirt, tie and cuff link combination can be a enduring process. Knowing the wedding colors and how the couple wants to mix and match the color combination into the wedding is the first thing. Once they know the colors and the look they are going for, that’s how his outfit is chosen.

Garth Peay has been customizing suits and shirts for 10 years and is the founder of Perfectly Suited. Peay feels Perfectly Suited allows the couple to design a groom’s suit to the wedding plans.

“Custom is pretty easy, we design what you want,” Peay said. “You pick the fabrics and color that would match your wedding attire. We also have an array of suits ready to wear.”

He thinks wearing a suit is more beneficial than a tux.

“A young man can get a suit, fit it to himself and it can be used after the wedding,” he said. “That’s the plus instead of renting a tuxedo.”

SUITS/TUXEDOS

There are several different style of suits to choose from. Starting with a modern fit suit (one vent back) is the most common style you will find. A tailored or trimmed fit suit (two vent back) is a little more European. After finding the style, finding the correct color is next. Suits colors range from Black, Gray, Charcoal, Navy and Tan. With any suit the couple chooses for the groom to wear, getting the suit tailored is important.

Lynette Danburry has been tailoring for 10 years. She opened Lady Danburry Tailoring and Design two years ago, she believes a tailored look gives the groom a unique style.

“Tailoring accentuates and defines a person’s body,” she said. “Tailoring makes the suit look like it was made for them.”

Tuxedos can be really simple. The black tux with a black bow tie is the most common style for a tuxedo. The one choice the couple can choose is the color of the tie or bow tie.

SHIRTS/CUFF LINKS

A white shirt can go with any suit and tie combination. Some shirts have a classic fit, which is a little more of a boxy fit made for the bulkier groom, compared to the slim fit dress shirt made for a more slender groom. If the groom chooses a French cuff shirt he will need to find cuff links.

Trey Cancilla, a manager at Banana Republic, sees a lot of groom’s come in for the white slim fit, French cuff shirt Banana offers.

“It’s a great fit, with good quality,” he said. “It has the slim fit look that’s versatile. We keep it classic and modern and up to date.”

Cuff links go with a French cuff shirt. A silver pair of cuff links is one choice. A gold pair is the second. The design of the cuff link is up to the groom. Cancilla believes choosing a pair of cuff links is the groom’s own personal style.

TIES

The tie is the signature piece of the grooms outfit. The tie is going to provide the color and spunk that brings all of the suit, shirt and tie combination into one. The tie can have so many different looks with choices of solids, patterns, paisleys, ginghams, polka-dots and stripes.

Ryan Roundy has worked at Banana Republic for nearly two years thinks the tie is what the grooms outfit is built around.

“Couples will bring in a tie they like and then match the rest of his outfit around the tie,” he said. “The tie really makes the outfit.”
