Get your cars ready, the women engineers are challenging the campus to an extreme pinewood derby.

As part of National Engineering and Technology Week the Society of Women Engineers will be hosting the derby to raise awareness about their major.

“When we were brainstorming, we wanted we wanted to do something that would appeal to everyone and introduce people to the different aspects of engineering,” said Emily Petersen, the SWE president.

The club is looking forward to the opportunity to show what they can do on the race track.

“We”re women engineers,” said Petersen, who is an electrical engineering major from Saline, Mich. “We never got to do this in cub scouts.”

Cars will be judged on creativity, style and speed.

“This is different from your regular pinewood derby,” Petersen said. “This is a chance to take the traditional restrictions and build on them. We want people to get their creative juices flowing.”

The only three rules are that cars are able to go down the track, don”t inhibit other cars and are not made out of anything radioactive.

The race will be held on Feb. 19 at noon. All majors are invited to participate, and cars can be bought in the Dean”s Office in 270 Clyde Building. All finished cars need to be turned into 270 CB before 5 p.m. on Feb. 17 in order to compete.
