A BYU student was hit and killed by a car Monday while she was crossing University Avenue near the LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Rebecca Blazzard, a 24-year-old from La Grande, Calif., was hit by a car while on her way home from campus at 5:18 p.m. Monday.

The accident occurred at 1820 N. University Ave. while Blazzard was crossing in a pedestrian crossing from the east side of the street to the west.

Several vehicles stopped to allow Blazzard to cross while a northbound Subaru, driven by George Bloch, a 66-year-old Park City resident, failed to stop and then hit her.

The cause of the accident has yet to be determined, according to Provo Police Capt. Cliff Argyle.

Blazzard was rushed to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

An investigation is under way and Bloch has not been charged, Argyle said.

“At 5:18 traffic was pretty heavy,” Argyle said. “None of the witnesses remember seeing her with a flag.”

According to Argyle, there are no orange safety flags in the flag stands located on either side of the crossing.

The Provo City Police Department reminds drivers to be attentive to pedestrians especially in pedestrian crosswalks.
