The March of Dimes is expecting up to 200 people to participate Saturday (May 5, 2007) in Utah County’s walk to save babies from premature birth.

“The walk is the largest fund raising event for the March of Dimes,” said Utah March of Dimes State Director Amy Hansen.

The walk supports the March of Dimes aim to prevent birth defects and infant mortality through research, community service and education, Hansen said.

“By being a part of WalkAmerica, we can help save babies and give hope to families,” Hansen said. “We can help give all babies the gift of a healthy start.”

Killing 28,000 babies a year nationwide, premature birth is the leading cause of infant mortality.

At 4.7 percent, Utah County’s infant mortality rate holds consistent with the rest of the state despite having the state’s highest birth rate, said Stephen McDonald, Utah March of Dimes director of program services.

“Nearly one out of every nine children born [in Utah County] is born prematurely,” McDonald said.

Of Utah County’s 1,400 births in 2005, approximately 340 were born with major structural damage.

“We are doing a lot of good work to save babies,” McDonald said.

More than 75 percent of the money raised from the walk will be used to research the prevention of premature birth and their subsequent birth defects. Funds will also be used to increase prenatal care and education, Hansen said.

The walk will begin Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Canyon View Park in Provo Canyon. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Activities will include a balloon artist, music and face painting for children.
