Following weather-related delays, Orem?s municipal golf course will open the first nine holes to the public today.

The remainder of Sleepy Ridge Golf Course will open Aug. 10.

Despite delays, Sleepy Ridge?s debt-free development sets it apart from many golf courses in the valley, course developer Golden Holt said. This public golf course was privately financed.

?It?s a course that we?re very proud of because of the way in which it was built,? said Mayor Jerry Washburn. ?It is completed and the city has no financial risk or commitment with it, and yet it provides all the benefits of a public course.?

Developers have spent $5.5 million of the $6.7 million allotted funds thus far, with the course and parking lot completed and the clubhouse still to be built, Holt said. Construction on the clubhouse will begin in September and should be completed next spring.

?We?re trying to give more of a resort feel to a municipal golf course,? Holt said. ?We want Sleepy Ridge to be people?s home course.?

Holt said they hoped to have the best municipal golf course in Utah. Washburn said it is a beautiful design.

?The views are breathtaking,? he said. ?You are surrounded by mountain views and you feel like you are detached from the city.”

The course is across the street from UVSC campus. Information may be obtained by calling 434-GOLF.
