Many BYU students feel inadequate with pressures from every direction and don?t know where to turn; however, they can rise above fears of inadequacy with the help of a series of lectures to be presented at UVSC.

Dr. Sterling G. Ellsworth will instruct on building positive and lasting relationships, understanding self-worth and overcoming fears to achieve full potential in this lecture series titled ?Self Understanding.?

Ellsworth, a practicing counseling psychologist since 1964, asserts the key to completeness and happiness is unfolding who and what people really are.

?Just as electricity and atomic energy existed long before they were discovered, so does our real self exist and many of us have not yet discovered it,? Ellsworth said. ?Your real self is extremely capable of doing all sorts of things. That?s why you need to get to know your inner self.?

Past students of Ellsworth say the class has helped them to make a change in their life.

?Often we try to implement different theories of life and don?t get the results we think we should get,? said Jennifer Tippets, a client of Ellsworth. ?He can go back to the inner signals that come from being raised in an imperfect world.?

Tippets said Ellsworth helped her turn her life around and establish who she is by relying on Christ for self-esteem and not other people.

?We are all brainwashed and we hear who we are and where we come from, but we don?t get it,? Tippets said.

She said Ellsworth will help uncover lies such as performance equals worth and externals can fix internals.

?Doctor Ellsworth is like an artist who takes different theories on personalities and blends them together to create a beautiful painting with a thread of spirituality throughout,? Tippets said.

Peggy Pasin, program coordinator of the Women?s Resource Center, teaches a class at UVSC on successful life management where she frequently quotes Ellsworth.

?My favorite quote of Doctor Ellsworth is, ?Don?t die dumb,?? Pasin said. ?I think LDS students would be well-served to hear what he has to say by taking advantage of this opportunity.?

Stephanie Stoker, a client of Ellsworth said getting love from God allows us to share it with others and not only be takers.

?It?s like getting groceries from God and sharing by making dinner for your family,? she said.

Ellsworth is a former instructor at Brigham Young University and Utah Valley State College. He is the author of ?How I Got This Way and What to Do About It? and ?Latter-Day Plague; Causes, Cures and Prevention of Pornography.?

The lecture will address the real self, identity and inner signals as well as love and worth based on God and self.

Lectures are open to the public 6:30?9:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in Room 167 of the Utah National Guard Building at UVSC. The cost for the lecture is $20 at the door, or $15 if paid before the day of the lecture.
