Two BYU Rugby players were arrested for investigation of burglary at the end of last semester, with the help of a lab surveillance camera.

Kristopher “Kia” Kamauu, 25, a senior from Napa, Calif., and Matthew Reinbold, 25, a junior, used a master key to enter a computer lab in the David O. McKay Building at around 2 a.m. on Dec. 9, 2003.

A student employee viewed surveillance footage taken by an Apple iSight camera connected to one of the lab”s computers. University Police were notified and were able to identify the two students from the footage.

Kamauu and Reinbold were arrested Dec. 12 for investigation of burglary. Both were in jail for the weekend and released the following Monday on bail of $15,000 each.

Carri Jenkins, assistant to the president for University Communications, said University Police are investigating the possibility of a link between the burglary and a series of other thefts on campus over the last 18 months.

Jenkins said police are also investigating how the students obtained the master key and evaluating the total value of the property stolen.

In an article in the Deseret Morning News, Lt. Greg Barber of University Police said a search of the students” homes recovered thousands of dollars worth of stolen electronic equipment.

Kamauu played for BYU”s rugby team last year. Reinbold was scheduled to join the team in January.

Jenkins said the Honor Code Office was still reviewing the case at the end of last semester.
