A Chinese film masterpiece is being presented at the BYU International Cinema through Dec. 6.

“Raise the Red Lantern” is the last of the BYU International Cinema films for the semester.

The movie tells the story of a nineteen-year-old student, Songlian, who is forced to marry a fifty year-old clan leader.

Songlian may be young, but she is not weak. Her power in the film inspired audiences all over China.

Gong Li, who plays the young girl, was rushed to stardom soon after the film”s release in the early ”90s.

The film is somewhat of a parable about the society of China in the late 20th century and director Zhang Yimou shot the film so that its rich colors and claustrophobic atmosphere match the story perfectly.

“Raise the Red Lantern” will be shown for free Dec. 2 through Dec. 6 in the Varsity Theatre.
