To see a competitive game of football, one can go to LaVell Edwards Stadium and see the Cougars, or can go across the street and watch BYU football intramurals.

“Its amazing how passionate some of these students are about intramurals,” said Shaill? Elder, 19, from Orem who works at the intramurals office. “We get some people who come in here cussing at us, because things aren”t going their way.”

Intramurals are available year round with different sports throughout the semesters and terms.

“Our goal is to provide an atmosphere of competition and fun,” Elder said.

Fun isn”t the word to describe how some BYU students feel about intramurals.

Wesley Jones, 22, from Duarte, Calif. majoring in landscape management lives for it.

“I can”t wait to get back to Provo and play intramural football with all my friends,” Jones said. “Our team has been together for almost three years.”

Teams play for fun, but the team that wins the championship gets a free intramural champion T-shirt. Every year the intramural office changes the design of the T-shirt.

“The main goal of our team is to win that T-shirt,” Jones said.

Intramurals are very popular at BYU and many students take advantage of the opportunity.

“Thousands of students participate every semester.” Elder said. “In the winter we have 500 men”s basketball teams and 200 women”s basketball teams.”

Intramurals are also available during the spring and summer terms.

“Softball is the most popular during the summer term,” Elder said. “But sports like racquetball and tennis are also available.”

Students interested in playing need to get a team together, then buy an intramural schedule from the intramural office in the Richards Building.

Schedules for the fall semester cost $25 and will available Sept. 2. Because of the high demands to play, students need sign a list to schedule an appointment to buy the actual schedule.

Once the schedule is bought, the students can do the rest over the Internet. Adding and dropping players from the roster is done electronically.

The intramural office will continue to enforce all honor code rules.

For example, if a student shows up to a game unshaven, the supervisors will turn him away.
