This time around, the little guys overshadowed the big guys. The unseeded women”s tennis duo, freshman Hadley Macfarlane and sophomore Nicole Schneider, made it all the way to the quarterfinals.

However, Macfarlane and Schneider lost 8-5 to Anda Perianu and Heather Saluri of Oklahoma in the quarterfinals of the doubles bracket at the 2002 Regional Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

No. 2 seeded seniors Lu Oswald and Dominique Reynolds lost 8-4 in the doubles round of 32 to the same team that beat Macfarlane and Schneider in the quarterfinals.

This was the final tournament on the team”s fall schedule.

“I thought we played great this week,” head coach Craig Manning said. “We played some tough opponents and got some great experience that will help us more and more as the season goes on.”

BYU placed five players in the singles main draw. Junior Tara Porter went unbeaten in the qualifying rounds to make it in the main draw. Sophomore Rebecca Pike and seniors Dominique Reynolds, Lu Oswald, and Elizaveta Khoudiarova were also in the main draw.

Porter tallied five straight wins to make it into the singles round of 32. Porter lost to Aleksandra Durska of the University of Tulsa 6-7, 6-3, 6-0.

Reynolds made it all the way to the round of 16, but lost to Linda Faltynkova of Oklahoma State 6-2.

“Overall, the tournament has been a good one for us,” said Manning. “We have been playing really well. I hope we can carry this over into the regular season in January.”

The Cougars take a break until Jan. 24, 2003 when they take on Kansas State.
