Elder Jeffrey R. Holland reminded Saints of their call to serve in the Saturday afternoon session of the 172nd semi-annual general conference.

Elder Holland compared the service Saints give today to the service of members” forbearers. He said the Saints” ancestors faced very different challenges, however, both generations have been called to serve.

Members must balance priorities to be the disciple the Lord wants, Elder Holland said. He encouraged members to follow the promptings of the Spirit. He said sometimes members must miss family and fun experiences in response to a call to serve.

“I testify of home and family and marriage – the most precious treasures of our lives,” Elder Holland said. “We must preserve them while we find ways to serve.”

Elder Holland told a story of a wife who made great sacrifices to support her husband who served as bishop in their ward.

“When duty and spiritual prompting require a response,” Elder Holland said. “I pay tribute to every wife who has ever sat alone, every husband who has ever made his own dinner and every child who has ever been disappointed in a postponed camping trip or ball game that a parent had to miss. But this better not be very often.”

Elder Holland expressed his thanks to the Savior for His sacrifices and encouraged Saints to follow the Savior”s example and answer the call to serve other people.
