Dominique Reynolds” 17-match winning streak came to an abrupt end in the finals of the BYU tennis Invitational.

Sanja Hansson of Colorado State defeated Reynolds 6-4, 6-3 in the final match of singles play.

“It was tough,” Reynolds said. “I was a little bit nervous.”

Head coach Craig Manning said Reynolds was consistent all week, but seemed a little nervous Saturday.

“Dominique played a little tight,” Manning said. “She did everything she could, but Sonja just played really tough.”

Reynolds ended last season on a 13-match winning streak. The senior went undefeated in four matches until she played in the final.

Reynolds was the only Cougar representing BYU at the finals, singles or doubles.

Senior Lu Oswald won the finals of the back draws bracket, defeating Caroline Pongratz of Boise State 7-5, 6-2.

“We played well, considering it is our first match of the year,” Manning said.

Reynolds said it is always hard to play the first tournament of the year.

“Everyone is so nervous in the first tournament of the year,” Manning said. “This gave us a good opportunity to get the jitters out.”

The Cougars have room to be nervous. The team holds high expectations of themselves.

“We set high goals for ourselves,” Manning said. “The girls want to win and I think we”re capable of achieving that.”

The team has its sights on the conference championship and a top 25 ranking at the end of the season.

The invitational was just the first step to achieving those goals.

The Cougars head to Colorado next week for the University of Colorado Invitational, Oct. 3-5.
