For students and families looking for something to do Friday, July 12, BYUSA might have the answer.

The student association will host a free outdoor presentation of the classic movie “Charade” in the JSB quad, starting just after sunset.

“The Student Leadership Programming Team does (an outdoor movie) every summer,” said Chris Bartholomeu, 22, from Springville, Utah, majoring in English, who is a member of the programming team. “It”s tradition.”

“Charade” is a 1963 film starring Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, Walter Mathau and George Kennedy.

Filmsite.org calls it “is a classic cat-and-mouse ”Hitchcockian” romantic comedy and an enigmatic thriller all in one.”

“It”s a fun date movie because it is a murder mystery,” Bartholomew said.

Heather Burnham, 20, a senior studying elementary education from Boise, Idaho, is planning on attending.

“Any free movie is a good movie,” said Burnham. “I think it is so cool that (BYUSA) is doing stuff like this for students.

Burnham has seen “Charade” before and is excited to see it again.

“I like Audrey Hepburn and I liked the mystery aspect of it,” she said. “The whole thing had so many twists and turns that by the end you didn”t know what to expect.”

Ron Jones, the Student Life Coordinator, said that families do not need to worry about the content of the movie.

“We try to pick movies that are non-offensive,” said Jones. “We looked through the movie catalog and came up with the idea of showing ”Charade”.”

In addition to “Charade” a few Bugs Bunny cartoons will also be shown before the movie, Jones said.

“Charade” will be shown on a large truck especially modified to act as a portable movie screen. This truck has a large screen draped over one side and is also used for new student orientation.

Jones encourages everyone who attends to bring blankets and lawn chairs to sit on.

Student Leadership will also provide free sno-cones and popcorn to all who attend.

The movie will begin at about 9:15 p.m. in front of the tree of life statue in the JSB quad. About 900 are expected to attend.

Jones said that the outdoor movie is one of two activities sponsored by student leadership this summer.
