In 2001 the Starzz finished their regular season beating the team that went on to win the championship. They are hoping to build on last year’s success with two first round draft picks.

The two-point win over the Los Angeles Sparks snapped L.A.’s 16-game winning streak. The Starzz finished the season with 19 wins and 13 losses. The team also finished third in the Western Conference standings, earning its first-ever playoff seat.

Joining the Starzz roster this season are first round draft picks, Danielle Crockrom of Baylor University and LaNeishea Caufield of Oklahoma.

“Caufield is a great shooting guard that is a tremendous defender and enjoys playing defense,” head coach Candi Harvey said, “She is a Big-12 defensive player of the year, so we’re thrilled to have a player with that type of mentality, she’s the total package.”

Crockrom is a 6-foot-2 post player that is the all-time leader in double-doubles for Baylor University.

“She gets it done on both ends and has a total game offensively and runs the floor well,” Harvey said.

Natalie Williams and Jennifer Azzi return this season after outstanding seasons last year. Williams is now second in the league for rebounds and Azzi led in three point field goal percentage shooting 51.4 last year.

The Utah Starzz opens their pre-season against the China National Women’s Team this Saturday at Franklin Covey Wellness Center.

The women will open to a sell out crowd.

The Starzz will tip off their season opener May 25 at 6 p.m. in Minnesota.
