Elder Haight to speak at Freedom Festival’s Patriotic Service

    Elder David B. Haight of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will be the featured speaker at this year’s Patriotic Service at the Marriott Center Sunday, July 2.

    The service is part of the Freedom Festival held this weekend in Provo.

    The service, America’s Promise, will begin at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live over the church satellite system.

    Ernie Thornton, president of the this year’s Freedom Festival said that Elder Haight has assisted in compiling the program “right down to the selection of the hymns.”

    Elder Haight was a commander in the United States Navy, receiving a special citation during WWII from Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, commander of the Pacific Fleet.

    From 1959 to 1963, Elder Haight served as mayor of Palo Alto, Calif. He resigned this position to become president of the Scotland Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

    Elder Haight became a member of the Twelve in 1976 after serving as a regional representative and president of the Palo Alto California stake.

    For his service to Utah State University, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

    He also received an honorary Doctorate of Christian Service from Brigham Young University in 1998.

    Music for the Patriotic Service will be provided by the Utah Valley Symphony, conducted by Bryce Rytting.

    Those attending the service must be seated by 5:45 p.m. Because the service is normally filled to capacity, doors will open at 4 p.m.
