Letter to the editor: Soapbox respect

    98

I’m sure most of you heard about the exciting events that took place at the Soap Box last Wednesday, but for those of you that were there, I am shocked. I try to go to the Soap Box every week, and I find it very interesting and insightful at times, especially when somebody explains a view different than mine.

But last week was a disgrace. Anyone that got up was being booed and mocked by almost every person there. Their views and issues were being completely ignored or attacked (and rather ignorantly, I might add). The Soap Box was on the verge of becoming a mob!

Now, this isn’t to say that I didn’t have a lot of fun that day. The closing ceremony with the leg shaving was definitely a sight to see. But I cannot believe that the Soap Box attendees and BYU students could be rude and ignorant enough to mock other people’s opinions and attack them personally, while screaming in public.

I’m not saying that we can’t disagree with other people’s viewpoints, but next time, let’s try to be more polite, and get up on the Soap Box ourselves if we want to refute somebody else’s opinion.
