BYU fourth at NCAA Golf Championship

CHASKA, Minn. — The winds increased and so did the scores in the third round of the 1999 NCAA Golf Championship at the 7,196-yard Hazeltine National Golf Club. In second-place entering Friday’s round, No. 16 ranked Brigham Young University shot a 17-over-par total of 305 to fall into a fourth-place tie with No. 4 ranked Clemson.

A 54-hole total of 293-298-302–893 puts the Cougars at 29-over par for the tournament and 11 shots behind No. 8 ranked Oklahoma State, who has a two-day total of 289-308-285–882. The Cowboys’ 3-under-par 285 was the only sub-par round of the day. Oklahoma State who began the third round tied for fifth, made up 18 shots to second-round leader Clemson.

“We got off to a tough start today,” said BYU coach Bruce Brockbank. “I don’t know, maybe we were pressing, but we just couldn’t make any putts. The guys hung in there and played well in the middle of the round, but then we had a couple more bad holes down the stretch.”

A bright spot for the Cougars was sophomore Billy Harvey of Las Vegas. Harvey, a 1999 All-Western Athletic Conference selection, fired an even-par 72. His three-day total of 75-74-72–221 is good for a tie for 10th place individually.

“Today was the toughest day by far,” said Harvey, who is currently ranked No. 33 in the nation. “The wind was blowing hard, especially on the back nine. I usually play well in the wind. I decided last night that I was going to stay calm today, try to hit greens and make pars.”

Other BYU scores from the third round included Andy Miller at 77 for a 54-hole total of 224 (tied for 20th); Scott Miller at 75 for a total of 225 (tied for 27th); Manuel Merizalde at 81 for a total of 226 (tied for 35th); and Jose Garrido at 81 for a total of 238.

Following Oklahoma State at 882 is No. 1 ranked Georgia at 887. No. 10 ranked Northwestern is third at 892, followed by BYU and Clemson tied for fourth at 893.

“This tournament is far from over,” said Harvey. “We are still in the hunt. With this course anything can happen. We just have to come ready to put it all on the line tomorrow.”

BYU is making its 25th appearance at the NCAA Tournament in the last 34 years. During that stretch, the Cougars have finished in the top five 13 times.
