“Your spiritual glasses: what you see is what you get” will be addressed at Tuesday’s Devotional by Connie Blakemore, associate professor of physical education, in the JSB Auditorium at 11 a.m.

“Your beliefs are the lenses through which you see the world,” Blakemore said.

Blakemore will examine three lenses that influence people’s lives and actions: individual worth, the body and the Holy Ghost.

“The message that I am bringing is hard for people to grasp because many of us think our worth is based on our accomplishments or what we look like,” she said. “We get worth confused with behavior. Behavior can be changed, but worth is a given and a constant. We all have great worth. I think this is hard for people to understand because the world doesn’t tell them that.”

Blakemore joined the BYU faculty in 1978 after 15 years of experience in the California public schools. She teaches classes that focus on methodology, team sports, supervision and student interaction with public schools.

She received her bachelor’s degree form the University of Utah, her master’s degree from BYU and her doctorate from Temple University.

She has worked as a consultant and public relations representative for the Women’s Sports Foundation. She prepared programs for the National Girls Scouts of America, resource materials for Sports Faire Format and guidelines for nationwide athletic competition.

“She is creative and comes up with innovative programs,” said Barbara Lockhart, BYU professor of physical education.

Blakemore developed a two-year cohort program in the Department of Physical Education called FLIGHT. This is a hands-on teacher preparation program for coaches and teachers that gives students the opportunity to focus on what they need to learn to be good teachers and understand what teaching is all about before they begin student teaching, Lockhart said.

The Devotional will also feature a musical number attributed to the former American Sign Language professor Dale Edward Link, who died July 17 after a battle with cancer. The musical number, “Sign Seeking,” was written and will be performed by Johanna Buchert. Heidi Egan, Jill Jenkins and a signing choir will also participate in the musical number.

The Devotional will be broadcast on KBYU-TV (Channel 11) and KYBU-FM (89.1) as well as in the Varsity Theater and 2084 JKHB.
