BYU Marriott School of Business alumnus John C. Lewis has been named BYU’s Advancement associate vice president for marketing.

Lewis came to BYU in 1996 to direct the public and alumni relations for the Marriott School of Management. His appointment by K. Fred Skousen, vice president of Advancement at BYU, was announced Thursday.

His new position will include the responsibilities of BYU’s division of licensing and trademarks, the KSL Association, Publications and Graphics, Special Events and the Cougar Club.

He has served on the WordPerfect Corporation’s board of directors, taught marketing in the College of Business at Westminster College and was vice president of corporate development for NuSkin Enterprises, Inc.

He is excited about his new responsibilities.

“Our major goals include doing all we can to generate revenue for the University,” Lewis said. “We want the public to be excited about BYU. We want the alumni and friends of BYU to be proud of what the school is doing and bound to it.”

Lewis said his corporate experience at Novell and WordPerfect is what prepared him most for his new responsibilities. After WordPerfect merged with Novell Inc., he was named a senior vice president on the company’s executive staff responsible for customer service worldwide.

“I was the 90th employee of the WordPerfect Corporation so I know what it is like to build a corporation from a home grown competitor to an international power,” Lewis said. “That is what BYU is, in a sense, an international powerhouse and it needs to be seen as such.”

His wife, Ann Lewis knows he is prepared and qualified for his new appointment.

“Everyone loves John. He’s kind to everyone and doesn’t play games. He does what he feels is right,” she said. “He has a talent for catching the vision of what he wants to attain and knowing the steps necessary to be successful.”

Lewis received his B.A. from BYU in 1977, his MBA in 1979 and also holds an M.A. in English from the University of Virginia.
