Letter to the editor: Grow up

    William Heaton

I am writing in response to a letter published in the Mar. 24 Daily Universe. In the letter, the writer was “shocked and appalled” concerning the decorating of the Brigham Young statue. This is the exact type of attitude that makes me weary of reading the opinion page of The Daily Universe.

What used to be a well-intended forum for voicing complaints has become a place for people to nitpick over insignificant occurences. Is it really necessary to our salvation to worry about how an inanimate object is decorated?

The writer also claims that decorating the statue is a “mockery to Brigham Young, the university and the Church.” First of all, I doubt Brigham Young is really concerned about such minute details. Second, a statue of Brigham Young is not Brigham Young. It is important not to confuse the symbol with the real thing. Let us make the Reader’s Forum a place for discussing issues that really make a difference to our BYU experience. Doing so will improve the quality of the newspaper as well as the university.
