Letter to the Editor: Appreciate the grounds crew

Welcome back to another Fall Semester. Those of us who work here all year love the beginning of school. If you weren’t here, we wouldn’t have such good jobs.

President Bateman’s request during the Devotional on Sept. 9 1997 was especially appreciated by me when he asked us to be more respectful of each other. What a difference this would make for all of us, particularly, if we would show our appreciation and respect for the grounds crew. Take a look around you and notice how beautiful the campus has become over the summer because of their hard work. I don’t think any of us would feel good if others didn’t respect our labor and trampled on it. Just think, there wouldn’t be any white chains on campus if we would take the extra five to fifteen seconds it takes to walk on the sidewalk instead of the grass. We have a choice until the grass is ruined. The “trails” are beginning to show up already and we’re only in the first month of the 1997-98 school year.

It is especially difficult to understand why people like to walk and ride bicycles through the mud when there is wet weather. This translates to mud stuck in the soles of the shoes and deposited inside the buildings to make more work for our custodial staff. Please think about what you’re doing before you step on the grass and let’s all take care of this beautiful place together.
