The BYU men’s tennis team, led by Boris Bosnjakovic, completed play in the five-day University of Utah Intercollegiate Invitational on Friday by winning all of its singles matches.

Head coach Jim Osborne was very pleased with the performance of his team, especially that of Bosnjakovic.

“To be this early in the season, I was very pleased with the wins we had,” Osborne said.

Bosnjakovic defeated the top seed in the tournament, Christian Svensson of Utah (7-6,7-5) to capture the A-division crown. Coach Osborne said Bosnjakovic had lost previously to Svensson five out of the six times they met. Bosnjakovic served very well in the tournament.

In the finals of the B division, BYU’s Roman Meyerhaus beat teammate Jason Hardin in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-4). In the consolation match for the A division, the Cougars’ Kris Rosander beat Mark Rodel of Weber State in straight sets, (6-2, 7-5). The consolation match for the B division featured teammates Mark Watkins and Carter Chow. Chow defeated Watkins, 6-4, 6-4.

BYU had one team of doubles competing in the tournament. The team of Bosnjakovic and Manuel Calvo were up one break in the third set of the doubles finals but were defeated by the Utah team of Svensson and Ben Coates (6-4, 3-6, 6-4).

The Cougars will participate in the Rolex Region VII Championships in Tucson, Ariz., on Wednesday. This will be the final tournament of the fall season for the Cougars.

“This is the biggest tournament of the fall,” Osborne said. The winners and finalist in the Rolex tournament will compete in nationals.

“We are not playing as well as we should this early in the season but we are figuring out ways to win,” Osborne said. Osborne hopes Bosnjakovic can play at the Rolex Championship as well as he did in the Utah Invitational.

The Cougars do have some injuries, but Coach Osborne believes the few days rest before the tournament will help.
