    National Hispanic Scholarship Fund: Available to graduate and undergraduate students of Hispanic American background who have completed at least fifteen units or credits of college work. Winners are chosen by academic achievement, personal strengths, leadership and financial need. The deadline is October 1.

    Rhodes Scholarship: Covers two years of study at Oxford University. It is open to applicants in all fields of interest. All costs are paid by the Rhodes Trustees. Students should make certain Oxford University offers the programs they need. The deadline is October 3.

    British Marshall Scholarship: They are applicable at any British university and cover two years of study that leads to a British degree. To be eligible candidates must be citizens of the United States, not yet 26, hold a bachelor’s degree when they take up the award, and have obtained a GPA of 3.7 after their freshman year. The deadline is October 3.

    Undergraduate ORCA Scholarship: These $1,000 scholarships are offered by the BYU Office of Research and Creative Activities to foster research among students. Selection of winners is based on a two page proposal and application as well as potential to perform the proposed work. All majors and disciplines are eligible. Once awards are made there are no restrictions on how the money can be used. The deadline is October 17.

    Spencer Dissertation Fellowships: $15,000 is to be awarded toward the completion of a student’s dissertation. The Foundation seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars from a variety of fields to undertake research on education. Applications by request.

    Alexander Von Humboldt Bundeskanzler (Federal Chancellor) Scholarships: This year-long award is for students who have fundamental knowledge of the German language and culture. Ten scholarships are awarded annually to students in the humanities, social sciences, law and economics. The deadline is October 31.

    Awards for Study in Scandinavia: These grants are available for United States citizens or permanent residents who have extensive language skills in Icelandic, Finnish, Danish, Norwegian or Swedish. These grants are to fund a well-defined research or study project that makes a stay in Scandinavia essential. The applicants must have finished their undergraduate education. The deadline is November 1, 1997.

    DAAD German Academic Exchange Service: This is an opportunity for students who speak German to travel, study and learn in Germany. Grants, travel awards and seminars are available to both faculty and students. Summer programs for studying German in Germany are also available. The deadline for grants for study and research are October 15 and November 1. The deadline for the summer program is January 31.

    Amelia Earhart Fellowship Awards for Women: This fellowship memorializes air-pioneer Amelia Earhart by supporting women in pursuing degrees in aerospace related sciences. To apply a woman must have a bachelor’s degree in science or engineering, a superior academic record, and a well-defined research program in aerospace related fields. The deadline is November 1, 1997.

    National Science Foundation Fellowships: are awarded for study in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, behavioral and social sciences, and in the history and philosophy of science. These fellowships are intended for students at or near the beginning of their graduate study. These fellowships are awarded for three years and carry a yearly stipend of $14,400. Applications are available the first week of October and the deadline is November 6, 1997.

    Separate competitions, using the same application, are held for the Graduate Fellowships and the Minority Graduate Fellowships. Minorities, women and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

    Charlotte W. Newcombe Dissertation Fellowships: These awards are for Ph.D. candidates who are writing dissertations on religious and ethical values in any field. The deadline to request an application is November 15, 1997. Howard Hughes Medical Institute: NIH Research Scholars Program. This program provides medical students going into their third or fourth year the opportunity of working with researchers, many of whom are Nobel laureates. 40 are accepted.     Howard Hughes Pre-doctoral Fellowship in the Biological Sciences: will award 80 fellowships in 1998 for full-time study toward a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree in the biological sciences. These awards are for three years, with extension possible for two more of full support. The annual stipend is $14,500 with an $14,000 annual cost-of-living allowance. The program is open to both U.S. and foreign citizens. This fellowship is not intended for those who are pursuing a medical or dental degree. The application deadline is November 15, 1997.

    National Physical Science Consortium Graduate Fellowships for Minorities and Women: The National Physical Science Consortium offers six-year doctoral fellowship program in astronomy, chemistry, computer science, geology, materials science, mathematical sciences, physics and subdisciplines. The estimated value of the fellowship is up to $200,000 depending on the cost of the university chosen by the fellow. Applications upon request. The deadline is November 15, 1997.
