Thanks to the Student Alumni Association, BYU is the first college or university in Utah to offer a photo directory of freshmen students.

The directory, new this semester, aims to build relationships among students.

Program Administrator Todd Hendricks said response to the directory has been positive.

“When I was a student, I wish I had this resource,” he said.

Photographer Herff Jones is working in conjunction with the Alumni Association on the directory. The team sent out a mailing to all incoming BYU students.

To be included in the directory, students sent a photo of themselves, along with information about their major, hometown and e-mail address.

“Participation is voluntary and students don”t need to purchase a directory to be in it,” Hendricks said.

It helps students start connecting with other students, he said.

Only about half of the students who purchased directories have received them.

“When they ordered it, Herff Jones directed them to pick it up at the Alumni house the first week of school,” Hendricks said.

Freshmen who ordered a directory can still pick one up at the Alumni House.

Other schools with similar programs include the University of California at Riverside, Georgetown and the University of Colorado.
