For all the cycling enthusiasts on BYU campus, a newly formed bike club will begin offering students weekly rides, service opportunities, workshops and chances to meet new people.

Though the bike club’s beginning social isn’t until March 26 at 7:30 p.m. in 3252 ELWC, interested students are invited to participate in a weekly ride and barbecue this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Gourmet Bicycles in Provo.

Organizers of the club said that in just the last few weeks over 100 students have become members. They said great enthusiasm for the sport expressed by BYU students and the organizers’ love of biking were the motives for creating the club.

The intention of the club is to build comradery with people who have the same devotion to the sport and to improve biking skills in different disciplines — racing, cross country or road, said Aaron Multon, 23, club presidency member.

“I’m very excited, because Provo is a very good place to ride, and I’ve noticed that many people enjoy the sport. It’s a chance to improve yourself physically plus see nature at the same time,” said Multon, a junior from Sacramento majoring in mechanical engineering technology.

“We hope to have a strong unity, have training workshops about nutrition, sports physiology, bicycle mechanics and stretching,” said Mark Strong, 23, club presidency member and a sophomore from Kansas City majoring in political science.

“We see it as a good opportunity to get people together. We want it to be that people can ride even the people just getting into it. If you want to go slow or fast, that’s fine,” said Mike Mathis, 23, club presidency member and a junior from Virginia majoring in exercise physiology.
