While many this holiday season are shopping to get the best gift, others in Utah County are struggling to get by with food and other necessities.

There are not many things that would drive people to spend the night standing in front of a store in 35-degree weather, but hundreds of people did just that for the grand opening of the first Trader Joe's in Utah. People seem to really love this chain of grocery stores, and they proved it by waiting in line for hours just so they could get a hold of some of their favorite foods.

Utah school officials are taking a look at growing numbers because economists are saying more people in the Provo/Orem area could mean a challenge ahead. Brigham Young University professor, Dr. Michael Ransom said, “more people coming in means more students.'

Laptops, cell phones and tablets sound like items on an adult's Christmas list, but children also want more high-tech gadgets from Santa. Adults aren't the only ones asking Santa for a new cell phone or computer this year; children are too. But Patti Phillips remembers her childhood holidays as more simple and cost effective than they are today.

An increase in supply is bringing oil prices down.Over the last three months, the average price of gas in Utah has dropped thirteen cents to $3.70 per gallon. Holiday travelers like Aubrey Schrag feel this is good news. Each year, Schrag makes the drive from Salt Lake City to his parents' home in Kansas, and he feels the price pinch at the pump. 'I have noticed it at least going down. This is the lower season so that helps, especially for traveling home. I'd say that it's manageable at least for myself right now. But it’s definitely tough, and it adds up,' he said.
